Syracuse University Commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board

 W E L C O M E

The Syracuse University Brown v. Board Committee and Community-Wide Dialogue to End Racism (CWD) are sponsoring Community Reads to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education.

The adult text selected for the reads is The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. DuBois, which is celebrating its centennial anniversary of publication.

The text selected for younger readers is The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson. This remarkably illustrated book captures the essence of Brown through the story of a friendship between two girls during the era of segregation.

Both books serve as powerful tools to foster discussion about the racial divides that have existed in the past and continue to exist in today’s society.

Readings and discussions on the books will be held at schools and various other locations throughout the community. Scheduled discussions include:

Thursday, April 22

A discussion on The Souls of Black Folk will be held from 7-9 p.m. at the DeWitt Community Library.

Saturday, April 24

A reading of The Other Side will be held from 1:20-2:30 p.m. at the DeWitt Community Library

Please check back for more scheduled dates. For more information, contact (315) 449-3552 or (315) 443-2901.
